He began painting at the age of fifteen and eventually landed a scholarship to attend Pratt Institute in New York. His books have received numerous awards and accolades including four Caldecott Honors, nine Coretta Scott King Honors and Awards, the Horn Book Honor Award, the NAACP Image Award for Best Children’s Book, and the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award. Monday Opening Remarks - Kathy Carroll (AASL President)
Kathy Carroll, lead school librarian for the Westwood High School Library Information Center in Columbia, South Carolina, is the 2020-2021 President of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Carroll is currently serving as an ALA Councilor-at-Large and as a member of the ALA Spectrum Advisory Committee. She is a member of the ALA Black Caucus and the International Relations, Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange, and the Sustainability Round Tables. She also volunteers as a site visit team member for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

Gloria Ladson-Billings is the Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education and an internationally known expert in the field. She has won numerous honors and awards, is a member of the National Academy of Education, and former president of the American Educational Research Association. Ladson-Billings has written two books, The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children and Crossing over to Canaan: The Journey of New Teachers in Diverse Classrooms.

He teaches courses on topics such as Digital Tools and Video Games & Learning. Jon has presented across the U.S. to educators as both a consultant and Google Certified Innovator, sharing his expertise at the ISTE, USMSpark, FETC, SLATE and ICE conferences, and the Midwest Google Summit. He also hosts the LaughED podcast, where educators around the world share humorous tales from their classroom.
